The Lieutenancy of Orkney

The Lieutenancy Team

The Lord-Lieutenant is supported by a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants that she appoints.

The number of deputies appointed depends on the county's population, for Orkney this number is 10.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant

The Vice Lord-Lieutenant is Sarah Scarth and, in her role, she will stand in for the

Lord-Lieutenant if she is absent, sick or otherwise unable to attend.

Sarah is married to David, and has three children. She is a graduate of Glasgow University, and, as Dr Stevenson, is a General Practitioner at Skerryvore Practice. A keen runner, Sarah is Chair of Orkney Athletic and Running Club.

Sarah was appointed as a Depute Lieutenant in 2018.

Deputies

Deputy Lieutenants come from all walks of life and are honoured for their contribution to the county. They are the eyes and ears of the Lieutenancy in our local communities. They advise on events potentially warranting Royal visits, on how local people can put forward others suitable for honours or for invitations to Royal Garden Parties, and on anniversaries warranting a message from The King.

The Lieutenancy Office

The Lord-Lieutenant is supported by Lieutenancy Office managed by the Chief Executive of Orkney Islands Council in the role of Clerk to the Lieutenancy. On a day-to-day basis this work is co-ordinated by the Depute Clerk, Karen Greaves.
